A Message from Toby…
How a Church Grows…
Countless studies have been conducted to determine what exactly leads to church growth. While there are several factors, to be sure, one simple truth remains: the personal invitation is still the most direct route to church growth that there is. When the people already in a church family make a regular practice of inviting their friends, co-workers, or neighbors to join them for a church event, that is still the most likely way for a new person to get involved with a church. Keep in mind that Sunday morning worship is only one of the events to which we should be inviting people. We have our 8:45 Sunday morning beach gathering, our Tuesday morning at 10 AM discussion group, our upcoming Earthkeepers Creation camp for 8-12 year-olds, and all sorts of musical performances as well.
If you like what’s going on at 1st Congregational UCC of Charlevoix, if you feel encouraged and edified in your faith, if you have found friends and fellowship here that matter to you, why not make a habit of inviting someone to join you? Our summer outdoor services are informal, fun, and far less threatening to the non-church goer than entering our sanctuary. Summer’s here and the time is right for inviting your friends to check us out.
OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Assistant Childcare Volunteer – Most of us know Lynette Webb. She has been our childcare point person for many, many years. She has done a great job, not only when we’ve had children present during our worship hour, but even when we haven’t. Lynette has been faithful by being here, ready and waiting, so that if a family with young children shows up, there is a safe and fun place for them to go.
But in today’s world, there are higher standards for safety where childcare is concerned. No longer is it an acceptable practice to have a lone adult supervising even a single child. We must always have two trained adults on hand in order to meet the legal criteria for safe conduct as our church insurance policy establishes.
If you or someone you know might be interested in working with Lynette, even if it’s only one Sunday a month, to provide for any children who would prefer not to be in the sanctuary, we’d love to talk to you. In the short term, this position might not require anything of you. But once we start effectively attracting younger families with kids, or once some of our grandkids start showing up for the summer, we’re going to need a helper for Lynette. Please talk to Julia Heddle if you are interested. Thank you! And be sure to thank Lynette as well, who continues to be present week in and week out.
Outdoor Worship Service Volunteer – Our outdoor services are fantastic for all of us and for potential visitors, but they do take a lot more work to set up and execute than our in-the-sanctuary gatherings. So far, the same three terrific families have shouldered this weekly load: the Trubilowiczes, the Smiths, and the Hesses. We are looking for individuals or families who would be willing to help one Sunday a month or so. The time commitment is from 9:30 am to noon. Please let Bill Trubilowicz or the office know if you can cover a Sunday or two. We’ll get you trained on the ins and outs. Thank you!
Our Homebound Friends – Are you someone who has to spend most of your time at home or in your care facility these days? We may have just the volunteer opportunity for you. Our deacons are looking for a person or two who could write and send a few cards each month to some folks in our church family. We’ll provide you with the cards, addresses, and even the stamps. Please call or email Joyce Herbert if you would be willing to help with this ministry of encouragement. Thank you!
Office Helper – Leah is looking for a person or two who would be willing to come in and get trained on some of the computer and office tasks she performs. It has become very difficult for Leah to get away with her family, because no one else can do any of the things she does to keep our church running so smoothly. It would give her a great deal of peace of mind if she could call upon a couple of trained volunteers when she is not able to be here. This could be your chance to unlock the mystery of things like Facebook Posts, all-church emails, and posting our recorded streamed services to the website. Please talk to Leah if you are interested.
Thank you for making a difference!
A New Feature in Our Newsletter…A Family Devotional for the Week
A number of our newer families with children have asked for a brief, discussion-based devotional that they could use at home during mealtime. So here is Episode #1 entitled “Is God Outside?”
- Read a contemporary Bible translation such as the New International Version or the New Living Bible of Psalm 8 and Job 12:7-10
- Discuss the following questions:
– When you are outside, do you ever think about God?
– Do you feel closer to God when you are inside or outside? Why?
– The writer of Psalms thought of God when he looked at the moon & stars. Any idea why?
– The writer of Job seems to think we can talk to and listen to the animals and the earth and even learn from them. Have you ever learned anything from animals or from the earth?
- As a possible after dinner activity, go outside together and ask each family member to find one thing that reminds them of God or makes them want to ask God a question.
- Close with a brief prayer like this: God, thank you for creating such a beautiful and interesting world. Thank you for every plant, every animal, every person, and everything else you made. Help us to remember You whenever we are enjoying the outdoors. Amen.
