First Congregational U.C.C. Charlevoix –
Weekly Newsletter July 30, 2020
Welcome to our weekly newsletter!
It looks like there is some open space in this week’s newsletter, so it gives me the opportunity to update you on some of the projects the Council has been working on:
First off, we thought the Farewell event for Pastor Greg was successful for a number of reasons. We were able to honor Pastor Greg for the work that he did to bring us along for almost two years. We allowed people to say their thanks and goodbyes to him. This event was also planned to allow us to test out some of our controls in the time of the pandemic. In the end, we were pleased with the controls and the response from the congregation to make the event as safe as we could.
Based on the success for the farewell, the Search Committee is planning a similar event to welcome Pastor Toby. The event will expand into a church service out in the garden. They have targeted August 16 for that garden service. Stay tuned – there will be a lot more information to follow.
Next, we have had some spirited discussions in Council to discuss improving the quality of our recorded Sunday services by purchasing some video equipment. As you watched the service from last Sunday, I hope you were pleased that the service was taped in the sanctuary. I know that it felt more like home to me. Our ultimate goal is to be able to live stream the Sunday service, but we have some work to do before that can happen. If you ever wanted to be a videographer contact me as we will need to have some folks who can help produce our video services.
There are questions out there about when/how we will be able to move back into the sanctuary. My answer is, when the time is right. We have a sub-committee working on the plans for a safe re-entry. The members are Alice Pletz-Miller, Dr Bill Wadland, Joyce Herbert and myself. We had a great discussion with Pastor Patty from the Benzonia UCC and have a draft policy that we gave to the Council for their first read. We’d like to buy some time by holding services in the garden while the weather is still cooperating but be ready to move inside as the weather changes.
It is the season to start our Stewardship Campaign so the Trustees, under John Dixon, are setting up the committee to start the campaign.
The Nominating Committee will soon be starting work on filling the slate for seats on the various boards for 2021. If you are interested in serving on a board, contact Pam Smith or Marty Trubilowicz. I’m sure there is a spot for you!
As far as I can tell the transition from Pastor Greg to Pastor Toby is going well (although you have to ask them or maybe Leah!). I know that Greg has helped out with the first recorded service that Toby conducted. Shelly and Roger have helped with the music for the services. But I want to give special shout out to Leah. Leah probably has the most knowledge about how things work around the church and has been a great help to Toby and to the congregation. I know that when the wheels start to come off, I call Leah!
Have you seen our new yard signs?
We have recently added two brand new signs to the church lawn. What do you think?
